My Happy Vita

I own a Playstation Vita, and I'm no longer embarrassed to admit it.

Thanks to the stellar line-up presented at this year's Gamescom, I once again feel confident in having forked out for the handheld when it was released earlier this year.

Whilst the situation might not be quite that dramatic, I still think it's fair to say that the Vita had stagnated of late, and that was a worrying sign for a console that hasn't yet seen a full jaunt round the sun. In short, things were looking grim.

E3 was worrying, with quality Vita games few and far between. Many of us started to wonder whether we'd backed the wrong horse. It didn't feel that way: it's an impressive machine. But the signals were there, and until this week they lingered like unwanted guests at a party.

But no longer. Sony's press briefing was a resounding return to form for the platform holder, and the Vita was upfront and centre the whole time. Worrisome days have transformed into exciting times. Or, at least, it's something close to that.

The most obvious place to start is with Tearaway. To call this a big announcement would be something of an understatement. Media Molecule, the brains behind the superlative Little Big Planet, has created an entirely new IP and it's coming exclusively to PS Vita. It looks like it could literally breathe life back into the young handheld.

Killzone Mercenary is another Vita exclusive that was announced, and it looks really good. And then there's Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, predictable, but the kind of title that is going to be essential if the Vita is going to pick up a mainstream following.

We saw a glimpse of the possibilities of cross platform gaming, with the Vita and Playstation 3 being used in conjunction with Little Big Planet 2. True, it had a very Nintendo-esque feel to it, but the fact that the capabilities are there is encouraging. Expect this connectivity to be explored even further when Sony finally makes the jump into the next console generation.

Then there was the announcements relating to Cross Buy, Sony's new initiative whereby content can be purchased for the PS3 and enjoyed on the Vita. It's another welcome incentive, and with more and more titles flocking to the banner, and with games such as Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time supporting the feature, more are sure to follow.

Throw in the fact that you can now buy PSone titles and that Sony are porting Playstation Plus (or at least a variant of it) over to the handheld, and I think you'll agree, it's been a very good week for Vita owners. Now, where's my charger lead gone...
