Clash of the Titans

The game had every chance of being better than the movie. And maybe it is, but it still isn't very good...

Clash of the Titans is a game based on the recent big budget blockbuster Hollywood flick. The movie was panned by almost everyone. We're used to it. But in this case they decided to do a remake of an awful original. And here is the video game based on the spectacle. Never have my expectations been this low.

Nevermind that. Let's head to down to Greece and beat our way through mythology. The main character Perseus, is something as rare as a man completely devoid of personality. There really aren't any distinguishing characteristics in his face. If you happen to sit next to him on the bus every day for you entire working life you wouldn't recognise him. But Perseus has another things to worry about, than his stealthy appearance.

One thing he ponders is why his biological father Zeus has abandoned him.How unfair it is to have to be raised in a poor fisher's family instead of Olympus. A stinking fisher for a father or a mighty God. Things haven't been easy for Perseus. And it's nice to see him work out his aggressions by slashing up thousands of mythological beasts.

Soon "fishing mommy" has put a sword in the hands of poor Perseus who heads out to slay beasts. Clean up the harbour from all evil, they say. Perseus and I comply. Clean up the mountains from all evil, they say. Perseus and I comply again. Mission upon mission of slaying all kinds of monsters. And it never ends.

At first the combat was entertaining. There is a wide range of weapons to vary your attacks with and with the proper resources you can make your tools of destruction even more powerful. If I hadn't known that this game was based on a movie I would never have guessed it. Wasn't this supposed to be much worse? But after a couple of hours the problems become plain to see.

The main problem is the repetitive game design. Every mission has to do with killing monsters. Even missions that pretend to be about something else are really all about piercing beasts with your trusted set of sharp objects. I was once fooled by a mission that claimed to be about fishing. Wohoo! I thought to myself. A mediocre mini-game to break up the monotoni. When I had beaten a long line of monsters I reached a body of water. All of a sudden a text box appears, "Fish acquired!". No such luck!

Clash of the Titans is something as predictable as another God of War clone. But we already have three God of War games to play, and the third one just came out. There is no need for boring clones. If you have fought your way through Kratos' adventures and still need more you should go for Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 4 or even Dante's Inferno before considering Clash of the Titans.

There is an attack that is used for stealing the weapon of your enemy (or some other loot), while you beat up on him or her at the same time. A smooth move like that is something you won't just use often, but rather all the time. You perform the attack by timing button presses while an animation is played out. It is designed to give the game a cinematic feel presumably, but when I'm forced to watch small movies rather than controlling the game myself I quickly grow bored.

The problems don't end there. The artificial intelligence leaves a lot to be desired. Enemies frequently spend their last living minutes running into walls. For some missions you will be paired up with another character, whose assistance is almost non existing. Loading times are commendably short, but are so frequent that they break up the rhythm of the game.

There is no reason whatsoever to run out and buy Clash of the Titans. Why have they made an action game where fighting isn't particularly entertaining? The first two hours of the game fooled me into believing that this was a better than average game, but as I logged in more hours I grew bored. An endless line of fights and after only a handful of hours Clash of the Titans appears unbearably repetitive.

Greek mythology and monsters to slay. Is this a God of War clone that delivers what the movie failed to deliver?
