Back at E3 earlier this summer we spoke at lengths with veteran game developer John Romero about Empire of Sin, the new project from Romero Games and Paradox Interactive, and at Gamescom we caught up with game director Brenda Romero to hear about the ideas behind the title.

"It's 1920s, we're in Chicago, it's the very beginning of prohibition, and your goal is to be king or queen of Chicago by the end of 13 years," she told us.

"There's a lot of different moving parts to the game, as there is to any deep strategy game. So you can play one of 14 bosses, so that's the high level, then you can't do that on your own, so you can actually hire crew as you go through the game. There's 60 different potential characters that are around Chicago that you can hire, and they range from entry-level thugs all the way up to super experienced hitmen. Obviously the better you do, the more attractive you are to them, and your crew size is variable, so some people just want to take a certain percentage of your income and kick up the rest to you, others might want a higher percentage of that."

"If there were no law enforcement things might go smoother, but there is law enforcement. So you start making noise, you start making rackets with your racket - that is such a cheesy line [...] As a boss you have casinos, you have speakeasies, you have breweries, so with those, you're making money. As you start to rise you might be getting into a lot of combat, taking out some other people, causing problems - the cops get involved. You start to build a big brewery empire like [Al] Capone did, and now the feds are involved. And so your goal is to try and find your way through this."

"It's as much a city, empire-building game as it is a crew management and a law management game. Our goal is to really put you in the shoes of a 1920s boss in 1920 and see how well you can do."

For more on the game be sure to check out the most recent gameplay trailer from Gamescom. Are you excited to see all of this come together?
