PopCap Games have laid bare what is perhaps the biggest change and improvement to Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 compared to its predecessor - Backyard Battleground. This multi-activity hubworld will let you play a horde-like mode with up to three friends, take on missions and adventures, check out your unlocks, play some target practice with shooting gallery mini-games, and more. It will also let you access the various multiplayer and co-op modes. Presumably you'll be able to use it as a lobby of sorts as well.

Here are some bullet points on what to expect from your Backyard Battleground:

· Flag of Power -  Jump into action right away with this King of the Hill-inspired mode. Raise the Flag of Power and do everything you can to prevent the enemy from lowering it; igniting an all-out war where you'll have to fight off wave after wave of enemies in an frantic, escalating battle.

· Missions and Quests - Complete missions for Crazy Dave and Dr. Zomboss, and uncover the secrets of Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 along the way. Or visit the Quest Board for a list of dynamically updated challenges that will reward you for every completed event, increasing your XP and coins.

· Crazy Targets - Test your aim in a frantic shooting gallery of fun - one of the many mini-games you'll discover and unlock in Backyard Battleground. Your best scores make it onto the leaderboard where you can compete for the best times against your friends - or even the world!

· Stats Room - Display all of your characters' stats and achievements. There's also a sticker book where you can get an overview of all the characters and accessories you've unlocked.

Additionally there's a dressing room where you can check out your character, and a recruitment stall that lets you switch sides - plants or zombies. Finally, you can launch an assault on the enemy encampment in the Backyard Battleground, just for fun and to boost experience and see how long you can last.

For those who are worried, the sticker album is still there as a neat way to look at your progress. And the video below also details the new and more involved way that you'll level up your plant and zombie characters. In case you didn't know, any character types you've unlocked in the original will carry over to the sequel, and additionally there are six new character types. Anyway, the video below offers a rather extensive look at this, so make sure you watch it.
