Hearthstone's Dungeon Run mode originally had achievements

But they were scrapped as they made the mode "less fun".

Hearthstone's Kobolds & Catacombs expansion launches this Thursday with over 130 new cards, including new legendary weapons for each class. One of the most exciting parts of the expansion is the Dungeon Run mode; a single-player experience that is meant to mimic a dungeon crawl, with different enemies and treasure to discover.

We had a first look at the mode back at Blizzcon, and in an exclusive interview with senior game designer Peter Whalen last week, he told us that the mode had achievements during development.

"The Dungeon Runs had achievements for a while that were just special for that," Whalen explained. "Like 'Summon 30 or 50 Silver Hand Recruits' in a particular run. It actually made them less fun, because instead of just trying to win, you were trying to do these weird things but you didn't have total control over what your deck was."

He went on to explain that the consensus was less of building the right deck to earn the achievement, it was more of selecting the incremental rewards that would only help with the achievement and wouldn't be the best choices to help you win, thus making your deck worse as a result.

We spoke to Peter Whalen and Ben Thompson, lead art director, a lot more, and you can read some of what they had to say on the new expansion here.
