This sees you locate transmitters before calling in a helicopter for extraction, except other players might pose a few problems.

While Ghost Recon fans may have their attention turned to the upcoming Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Ubisoft has just revealed a brand new game mode for Wildlands called Mercenaries, available starting today to throw players into an eight-player free-tor-all experience.

In Mercenaries you have to call for rescue, locate, and reach the extraction point, which is unknown at the start of a match. Players have no ranged weapons, gear, or items when they enter, and radio transmitters need to be found to shrink the possible extraction zone, a little like battle royale titles. The first player to activate three transmitters will get a helicopter to the extraction point, where it will be revealed to everyone.

That said, you start with nothing when you respawn, rather than simply dying and being out of the game, and there's a new health and armour system as you pick up protection. You bleed when you're shot with a weapon with penetration damage too, and medikits, bandages, and syringes are able to help. Finally, destructible doors will be available as well, although opponents can hear these breaking if you're trying to get the valuables inside.

Those who complete their first match will get the Lone Wolf costume, and there are other rewards available based on wins. A Rewards Program is also available to all players until September 27, requiring you to complete challenges for rewards in Breakpoint, with Memories of the Wildlands dialogues also available. More details on the Rewards Program can be found here.

If you're interested in Breakpoint, then be sure to check out our E3 gameplay and preview. We also talked with creative director Eric Couzian in LA, who told us that their goal is to "give a sequel to Wildlands" with this new game.

Will you jump into Mercenaries?

REVIEW. Written by Matti Isotalo

"There are only a handful of big-budget open-world games with campaign co-op as good as this."
