According to a report, Sony has sold 2.2 million PS Vita handhelds since the console launched earlier this year. PlayStation Germany boss Uwe Bassendowski revealed the number to Playfront during Gamescom.

At Sony's press conference the Vita was centre stage, and off the back of a strong showing, many predicted a turnaround for the handheld. If a turnaround is to be achieved, then Sony are going to have to start shifting more units, because figures (as uncovered by MCV) don't compare favorably when held against those of other handhelds.

At this same stage in their respective life cycles, PSP had shifted over 5 million units and the Nintendo 3DS has sold an impressive 6.68 million.
When faced with those kind of numbers, the severity of the situation faced by the handheld once again snaps into focus. Sony will be hoping that they can maintain the momentum gained at this year's Gamescom.
