The pixelated and so-popular Shovel Knight will keep on growing even beyond the King of Cards expansion, which is a new story led by another of the original game's antagonist. Yatch Club Games will announce the release date for that one this week at PAX West, along with some new amiibo figurines. But they also just unveiled Shovel Knight Showdown, a pretty different proposal for 2019.

It's quite the game changer for the franchise, as it goes from 2D platformer to a multiplayer brawler ala Super Smash Bros. As such, up to four players will be fighting each other (or team-based) in several game modes. 16 characters from the medieval lore will join the fray, including both well known such as Shovel Knight himself and all the other Knights, or fighters which are completely new to the series, such as The Sorcerer.

Shovel Knight Showdown hasn't been shown in motion yet, but we have its first screenshot gallery below, showing both character selection screen and several combats. Those who paid for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will be able to download Showdown for no additional cost, while those who have been buying separate expansions will be able to buy it for 9,99 euro. But beware it leaves the handhelds behind, so it'll "only" release on PS3, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Wii U, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux, and Amazon FireTV.

REVIEW. Written by Ingar Takanobu Hauge

"In spite of being frustratingly difficult this is one of the most entertaining platformers I've played in a long time."
