The Suicide Squad

Fun to watch and entertaining as heck, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

David Ayer's Suicide Squad back in 2016 didn't receive much praise, but at least we all remember Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. About five years later, it's time to try again. The director and writer is James Gunn, who we remember best from Marvel's Guardians of The Galaxy. And Gunn's version is a lot better than Ayer's version was. It's fun to watch and entertaining as heck, and the humor is mostly on point. Oh, and all those shirtless guys do look handsome.

Seemingly a random team of super bad guys is recruited to do a suicide mission. And why? Because the island of Corto Maltese has experienced a military coup, and with that, a secret alien project is now in the hands of the wrong people. It is up to Task Force X to go there, and basically destroy everything. There is more story here than that, of course, but let's not worry ourselves with those things.

The Suicide Squad: Suicide Mission

From start to finish the movie is almost entirely action, violence, and humor. The action itself is extremely impressive to look at, blood and body parts fly everywhere and the jokes are usually good. There is a right balance among the staff in between being a serious professional in making movies, but also just having fun with tongue firmly on your cheek. Everything is done with world-class professionalism, but I can almost guarantee that more than once the actors have laughed hard while filming. Not one area of the movie is clearly worse than others. This means that as a viewer it's a pleasure to just watch and enjoy.

After the movie, you can remember pretty much all the different characters, which is not a small feat from a movie this size. No one is stealing the spotlight, and everyone gets their share of screen time. I find it very positive, that John Cena has become a competent movie actor, even if we remember him mostly as a wrestler. I would have personally hoped for a bit more screen time for Harley Quinn, but this more balanced approach to different characters also works really well.

The story jumps chronologically backward and forwards in time a handful of times, but nothing to distract you too much from what's going on. There is a small amount of societal critique here as well, but only a little. You can't say, though, that The Suicide Squad: Suicide Mission is a political statement of sorts. This is just an entraining movie for adult geeks and comic book fans. No more, and no less. And that's enough.
