Two weeks ago Metroid II: Return of Samus, a game first released for the for the original Game Boy, was launched as a remake for the Nintendo 3DS and named Metroid: Samus Returns, receiving a lot of praise and making players question whether another 2D Metroid remake is on the way.

According to Metroid franchise co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto, who recently spoke to Game Rant, there are no plans for another remake at the moment, but he also stated that this will ultimately come down to what fans want, so future remakes aren't totally out of the question.

"It really depends on the reasons you have for undertaking such a challenge, whether there's a need for it, and your own motivation, but at the moment I have no plans for another remake. I think we need to spend time considering whether fans are only wanting remakes going forward, and what that might mean."

Game Rant further speculates that Nintendo is probably testing waters with the 3DS instead of making a bigger financial effort in bringing a 2D Metroid to the Switch right away. This would explain why Samus Returns was released on Nintendo's handheld console instead of their flagship system.

What form would you like to see Metroid in next? Would 2D be your first choice?

REVIEW. Written by David Caballero

"It's a truly enjoyable and thoroughbred Metroid, and the 3D re-imagining allowed the designers to create much richer environments."
