Two new legendary lords and a new campaign are coming to Total War: Warhammer II on December 12, with The Creative Assembly today unveiling a new expansion called The Shadow & the Blade.

Tz'arkan, the Drinker of Worlds (what a job title that is) has escaped from behind bars in the Realm of Chaos and has "latched himself onto the mind" of a Dark Elf by the name of Malus Darkblade (he's got a good name too, you can see why they were drawn to each other). In response to this new danger, a Skaven assassin called Deathmaster Snikch is on the case, with the whole thing playing out across an "intertwined campaign".

The two new playable factions - Clan Eshin (Skaven) and Hag Graef (Dark Elves) - will each come with a new legendary lord, plus a host of new units, including the Highbeast Master, Bloodwrack Medusa, Master Assassins, and Eshin Triads.

There's also a free content update coming for those who choose not to invest, and that includes a Legendary lord called Repanse de Lyonesse (Bretonnia), and a Legendary hero by the name of Henri Le Massif (also Bretonnia).

On top of that, we're promised quality of life improvements that should mean up to 60% faster turn times, with the added caveat that the wait will be dependant on your current game state.

For more on the content, which is playable in both the Eye of the Vortex and Mortal Empires campaigns, head over to the official Q&A.
