The NPD Group has collected the data from the US video game sales for the month of March and it's a great read if you're Ubisoft, or Rare for that matter. Even Kirby got in on the party.

No surprise that Far Cry 5 was the best selling title of the month, in fact, it leads both PS4 and Xbox One sales. Furthermore, it's premiere month was the best in franchise history in the US, so clearly, the Montana setting and controversy didn't hurt sales. It nearly doubled the revenue record set by the previous best in the series Far Cry 3 (the cleverly devised season pass and Gold Editions likely helped make that happen). More surprising is perhaps the fact that Rare's Sea of Thieves came in second place, registering the best ever first month for any game developed by the veteran British studio (and that's not including Xbox Game Pass players). Ranked fourth was Kirby Star Allies, and it also managed a new franchise record, in fact, it nearly doubled the previous best set by Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland (2002).

On the hardware side of things, the overall numbers declined by 32 percent compared to 2017, but that was, of course, the launch of the Nintendo Switch making the comparison a particularly tough one. PlayStation 4 as a whole was the winner in terms of most combined hardware sold, but Nintendo Switch (red/blue) was the best-selling single SKU and holds the same distinction year-to-date. Year-to-date hardware numbers are up by 13 percent, mainly as a result of improved Xbox sales.
