The timing of this release is just perfect; just as Quentin Tarantino releases his latest movie Inglourious Basterds, the highly Tarantino-esque Wet is released on the market. You may wonder why this is relevant as you prepare an angry letter to our editor. Well, it's because Wet is basically Tarantino in game form; lots of shooting, a cringe-worthy amount of blood and a ridiculously beautiful lady as the main character. Ka-ching, boys and girls!

"Wet" in this case is short for "wetworks", a term used when a mission goes wrong and the agent's hands get wet with blood as a result. Rubi, the game's protagonist, is a well endowed young lady with a single goal: to get what she's hired to get, and to kill everyone who stands in her way. An assassin, in other words. The plot of the game is fairly ok, but never intriguing. It's a standard setup with an easily predictable outcome. But let's not focus too much on the negative aspects.

As Rubi you are sent to infiltrate a business meeting where a briefcase of extreme interest to your employer will appear. After killing everyone in the room but one guy, the sole survivor runs off with the briefcase, and you rush after him. During this sequence you get to familiarize yourself with the controls and different acrobatics in Rubi's repertoir. Among my favorites are sliding across the floor, guns blazing, or jumping off high places and shooting off enemies in bullet-time sequences. The controls works fine, and the tutorial helps you to get an overview before the game gets too hectic. They initially seem a bit random, though, but most of the moves are easy to accomplish once you get the hang of it.

More moves will be unlocked during the course of the game, so your choices never seem limited. The unlockable upgrades are fairly standard for the third person action genre, but the aestethics and style of the game keeps it interesting.

It's impossible to talk about Wet without mentioning Mr Tarantino at least a few times, as the 70's pulp combined with the hardcore action sequences seems like nothing less than a homage to the director's style and tradition. The concept of the game seems really well thought out, so it's a shame that the environments keep ruining the experience. Many areas seem closed in which limits the sense of freedom to explore freely.

The game has its highlights, though. I'm not personally a huge fan of quick-time events, but I have to admit they work just great in the more action heavy parts of Wet. Jumping from car to car while removing random body parts from non-expectant enemies looks and feels pretty spectacular.

My biggest concern is the similarity of the missions, and it all ends up as very predictable after a while: hunt down some object or person and kill everyone that might try to stop. Rinse, repeat. Don't get me wrong; games like Gears of War manage to keep this kind of setup exciting throughout the whole story, but Wet lacks the extra effort to keep things interesting all the way.

As I mentioned before, the story is absolutely forgettable, not very innovative and extremely predictable. It does add a little bit to the atmosphere and entertainment value, but it still lacks a decent set of dialogue. The movie sequences are so boring you just yearn for them to end so you can get back in control of Rubi. The signature witty dialogue and black humor from the Tarantino movies are contantly absent.

The music score of the game is, however, brilliant to the point of bringing a tear to my eye just writing about it. Forget every prejudice you ever had towards generic game music; the score of Wet is excellent. Wether you choose to chop up your enemies or put large holes in their bodies; the background music adds to the experience brilliantly. The songs, a huge selection of tracks from the 70's and more contemporary acts, perfectly complements the idea of a gun crazy super vixen..

Wet would undoubtedly be a much better game had it contained a better plot and dialogue as well as more variation in the mission structure. But other than that, this is first and foremost a fun and exceptionally gory experience. Now that the flu season is closing in, there's nothing better than a light fever combined with Wet to keep you home from school or work. If you appreciate 70's pulp, a playful Tarantino inspired style and beautiful animations, nothing should keep you from rushing to your local game outlet. Well, except armed enemies. Better bring a samurai sword.
